Wanderful Wednesday

Four years ago I spent some time with my family on the Turkish coast in Marmaris. With over 100-degree heat, it was unlike any place I'd ever been.

A ferry ride from the island of Rhodes, Marmaris is a beautiful coastal town that boasts incredible resorts, restaurants, beaches, and nightlife. It is believed that in Marmaris, Cleopatra even built a beach for her lover Marc Anthony.

We spent our time relaxing by the harbor watching the sailboats, shopping the incredible textiles and spices in turkish markets, and enjoying heavenly meals of egg plant, pilavi, hummus, and dolma. My favorite part of Marmaris was the tea:

It was served everywhere--the markets, shops, roadsides, restaurants, you name it. Tea was all over. My favorite was the light apple tea. It was sweet enough that no sugar was needed, and it was surprisingly refreshing amidst the heat.

The fragrant tea is delivered all over the city by "tea carriers" (çayci), who speed walk from place to place delivering the brew. In Marmaris, everyone has time for tea. They pause their day for a soothing cup and take time to relax. They don't drink while busily working away. They stop their work, sit down with friends, and enjoy.  I loved this. This Turkish people understand the importance of taking a breath and just letting it go for a moment.

I think we all could use some tea-time in our lives.
